Horse farm – Mérens Breeding

Laurent, a local from the region, invites you to explore the valleys and mountains of Oisans with his Mérens horses. His stables have around 60 horses, including 10 brood mares, which live together in
Besse en Oisans (1500 m) until autumn, before coming down to the Bourg d'Oisans plain until springtime. From the time they are young foals, they follow their mothers up to the pastureland where together they learn the rules of living in a group and become familiar with the mountain environment.
These little black horses, which are the pride and joy of their owner, are surefooted mountain animals. They will take you through the Bourg d'Oisans plain, galloping along the banks of Romanche and Vénéon rivers and into the heart of the wonderful Alpine scenery, with its unique panoramic views of iconic summits, including the Meije and the mountains of the Massif des Grandes Rousses.

“Mérens horses are a passion!
I am closely involved with the Rhône Alpes SHERPA Association (Syndicat Hippique d'Elevage de la Race Pyrénéenne Ariégoise), as I have been the chairman since 2009. The aim of this association is to boost the sporting image of Mérens horses amongst the general public and ensure that the quality of regional production is recognised at national level".

Laurent also takes part in a number of breeding contests, as well as shows where he mounts or harnesses the horses.
To complete his business, Laurent also breeds Limousin cows for their meat, which he sells in packs to order.
Finally, in winter time, Laurent switches mounts and gets on a grooming machine on the ski slopes of Les Deux Alpes.

Horsering all levels from May to October:
-Half day or full day in the Bourg d'Oisans plain or on the Emparis Plateau starting from Besse.
-Horse trekking for 2, 3, 4 or more days. These are high altitude treks that involve riding between 5 and 6 hours per day at altitudes of between 1500 m and 2400 m. Nights are spent in gites, mountain huts or bivouac. Personal belongings are forwarded to each evening’s destination.
