In an enchanting natural environment, relive the extraordinary history of the summer of 1944 as experienced by the resistance fighters, the American soldiers and the hospital of Alpe d'Huez.
About : Historical hike of the Maquis de l’Oisans
In July 1944, a military hospital was set up on Alpe d'Huez.
The Germans won the battle of the Vercors at the end of the same month. At the beginning of August, they headed towards the Oisans. Faced with the imminent arrival of the enemy, the hospital decided to flee into the mountains to avoid a massacre.
Americans who had literally and figuratively fallen from the sky helped evacuate the hospital. A battle took place on 14 August 1944 at the Alpette above Oz-en-Oisans. The hospital, which had been withdrawn to the La Fare refuge, witnessed the battle between the Uissans maquisards and the German 157th Alpine Division. The Germans lost men in this battle.
After no less than 5 successive retreats into the mountains in incredible conditions, the group from the hospital managed to reach Grenoble, finally free of the invaders.
