A network of trails around La Garde

With its valley and alpine meadows, La Garde is best explored via its network of hiking paths. They will take you into the wilderness or up to neighbouring villages.

The Oisans region is a paradise for hikers and can be taken in all directions thank to its ancient network of trails. From villages to hamlets, up to alpine meadows, humans have created a complex chain of tracks since they have been living in the mountains.

These are just some of the hiking experiences around the village!

The GR 54

The legendary GR 54 road crosses Oisans and passes through the Écrins, circling the wildest of landscapes in the massif.
As Bourg-d’Oisans is one of the main GR starting points, hikers begin their journey on the path that cuts across the Alpe d’Huez road before reaching La Garde. Please note that this section is new after the closure of the Sarenne waterfall trail, so not all information will be up to date.
Next is the La Garde crossing, an uphill journey through the beautiful Forêt de Maronne. It’s a climb (but it’s worth it), with the Hameau du Rosay offering you a place to rest, before taking on the crossing the prairie, after which you can hike down the sloped and rustic trail to the Gorges de Sarenne. The rest takes place on the Chemin des Pêcheurs. It’s quite the countryside!
Take a picnic to eat in the shade of the old mill and have a wonderful day out!

Hiking through hamlets

The balcony path that runs the length of the prairies above the Vallée de la Romanche has a spectacular view of the peaks, and leads all the way from the hamlet of La Ville to Armentier le Bas, then Armentier le Haut.
Under the watchful eye of the trees and squirrels, this mountain climb will take you between Armentier and Maronne.
Finally, return via the downward path to reach La Ville through the magnificent and tranquil Forêt de Maronne.
What a great hike!

The balcony trail to La Sure

Getting to the peak of La Sure, starting from Armentier le Haut, makes for a solid day of walking, with 700 m of slopes. You’ll be blown away!
The path gradually ascends alongside the cliff, before climbing through meandering roads on the summit. Afterwards, the path turns west and continues to climb along the edge of the forest, before reaching a spot that overlooks Auris and its resort. The trail continues its gradual climb up to Les Sures.
Take a breather, have a picnic, take in the view; you deserve it!
