Just two hours of easy walking along the Muande mountain stream rewards you with a magnificent panoramic view offering striking contrasts between the high peaks, glaciers and relaxing, green pastureland.
Starting point: Champhorent
Height gain: 543 m
Duration: 2 1/2 hours
Distance: 5 km
Start from the hamlet of Le Champhorent, located 3km after St Christophe en Oisans.
The car park for La Lavey is signposted just below the road at the entrance to the hamlet. Take the path that leads down to the Vénéon and the pretty stone bridge, the Pont des Rajas. Cross the bridge into the Muande valley, following the stream up, firstly on the right-hand bank and then on the left after crossing another stone bridge.
After the shepherd's hut, cross over the slabs to reach the mountain hut, hidden behind a small glacial outcrop.
There is a warden in the hut from mid-June to mid-September, providing tasty snacks during the day.
A variant for the return walk is via the Lac des Fétoules, signposted from the hut.
The hut is an ideal base for several day hikes, including to the Lac des Beches (2 hours) and the Lac des Rouies (4 hours).
Inside the Ecrins National Park boundary; no dogs allowed, even on a lead.
