GPX map and layout
In the Ecrins National Park, no dogs allowed (even on a lead).
Located at the foot of Les Bans, the Refuge de la Pilatte mountain hut is not only a great place to hike up to, but also a popular starting point for mountaineers. The view over the Pilatte glacial cirque lace from the hut terrasse is simply magnificent.
Starting point: La Bérarde
Elevation gain: 837 m
Total duration: 4 hours
Starting from La Bérarde, park just below the village and walk up the pedestrian path ("La Calade") to the Maison de la Montagne. The easy and relatively flat path starts at the end of the road after the Maison de la Montagne and follows the right-hand bank of the Vénéon to the Refuge du Carrelet hut (around 1 hour). Then ignore the path off to the left, which leads up to the Refuge de Temple Ecrins, and follow the stream on a path that climbs more steadily. At the end of the glacial valley, cross over the footbridge (where patches of snow remain at the beginning of the season) and follow the path up the left-hand bank, which becomes steeper, with switchbacks leading up to the rocky outcrop just below the hut.
From 01/06 to 30/09.
