One Thousand and One Nights stories – Exhibition

Description: One Thousand and One Nights stories - Exhibition

Come and rediscover the stories of the sultan Shâriyâr and Scheherazade !

The sultan, who found out that his first wife was unfaithful to him had her beheaded. He thus resolved to marry a new virgin each day and behead her every next morning, so that she would have no chance to dishonor him.
Scheherazade, the vizier's daughter, offers herself as the next bride, despite knowing she would be killed the next morning. On their wedding night, Scheherazade begins to tell the sultan a tale until dawn, but does not end it.
The sultan, curious about how the story ends, is thus forced to postpone her execution in order to hear the conclusion. Day by dayn Scheherazade continues the tale started the day before and the sultan, eager to hear the end of the tales, spares her life.
Each piece of tale becomes a new night.

From Aladdin, to Sinbad the Sailor through Ali Baba, we all know some of those tales from our childhood.
This masterpiece of international litterature is an exceptional link between Eastern and Western cultures.
Resulting in a richly layered narrative texture, The Arabian Nights are a real cliffhanger to rediscover.
This exhibition, presented by the departmental media-library, tackles some of the strongest themes in the collection and shows some of the most famous tales.
